Life Begins…
Last month was the annual March for Life. One of the central questions around the pro-life or pro-death um, er, pro-choice issue is the question of when life begins. Everyone really knows though, that the answer is that point in time where before it there was not a human life, and after it there is. That is the definition of beginning; and we all know that. It is not, nor has it ever been a scientific question, but a question of changing “science” to justify sin. The scientific evidence for the beginning of human life at conception is not telling anyone anything that they do not already know. So why should abortion be illegal?
I think that Ben Shapiro, an Orthodox Jewish man and unsaved (as far as I know because unless he has believed on the Lord Jesus Christ he is still dead in trespasses and sins) has said it clearer than anyone else that abortion should be illegal because it is evil. We all know that, too, and should be able to say it clearly.
But this, as I said in my last post, only goes one more step to state why mankind is in desperate need of the Savior. Looking through the history of mankind we see little other than injustice and evil, with no answer within us to cleanse us from the evil nor to make our collective and individual injustices right.
While Christians and non-Christians alike can get into the fight to end injustice, and one particular injustice in the killing of the not-yet-born, we as Christians should first get right within our own minds the answer to the “when does life begin” question.
While in agreement about the ending of this evil of infanticide, I have no delusions to think that mankind is on track to become better. When fighting a battle to get the unsaved to agree that this is evil and should be stopped, even if some do change their mind and agree to that which is so obvious, that person is still dead in trespasses and sins.
All of the talk last month pointing out the answer to when life begins brought to my mind this hymn from years ago, for which I cannot even find the author’s name for certain, nor the full song anywhere on the internet:
Life begins at Calvary where Jesus died for sin,
Until you come to Calvary your life will not begin.
The life received at Calvary will never, never end,
So come to Christ at Calvary, He’s still the sinner’s friend.
When does life really begin? At Calvary, where the old life in Adam died to sin and the sinner is risen with Christ to walk in newness of life — baptized into Jesus Christ and His death, “risen with Him through the faith of the operation of God, who hath raised Him from the dead” (Colossians 2:12).
Sinner, find life with Christ at the cross, where He died for your sins. Believe on Him and be justified from all things. Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ and “thou shalt be saved”!
“And you hath he quickened, who were dead in trespasses and sins; Wherein in time past ye walked according to the course of this world, according to the prince of the power of the air, the spirit that now worketh in the children of disobedience: Among whom also we all had our conversation in times past in the lusts of our flesh, fulfilling the desires of the flesh and of the mind; and were by nature the children of wrath, even as others.
“But God, who is rich in mercy, for his great love wherewith he loved us, Even when we were dead in sins, hath quickened us together with Christ, (by grace ye are saved;) And hath raised us up together, and made us sit together in heavenly places in Christ Jesus: That in the ages to come he might shew the exceeding riches of his grace in his kindness toward us through Christ Jesus. For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: Not of works, lest any man should boast. For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus unto good works, which God hath before ordained that we should walk in them.”
— Ephesians 2:1–10
